Term 4

English Reading and Writing

In Destination Reader and our writing sessions this term, we will be focusing on the book 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes. We will use the books to develop our reading fluency, comprehension and understandings of different genres in reading.

In writing, we will use a range of writing purposes that include asking and answering questions and using imperative verbs to write instructions. We will also use the text to support with writing dialogue from different character perspectives and embed this into our own writing.

With writing, please ensure your child continues to practise their Common Exception Words spellings at home using the materials we have provided.

With reading, the children should continue to access a range of texts that utilise their AR books (brought home daily and read at least 4 times per week) and their MyOn online reading support.

Please see the MyOn guidance sheet that was sent home for assistance with accessing their accounts.

Manipulating the additive relationship and securing mental calculation.

This term in maths, we are continuing to use the NCTEM recovery resources in connection with the National Curriculum to develop our mathematical reasoning and understandings around number, place value and a secure knowledge in mental mathematics.

We will focus on the developing the use of known maths facts and different strategies to ask and answer varying questions relating to addition, subtraction and missing number problems. As the term progresses, this will develop into using these strategies within a range of contexts including statistics, measurements and shape problems.

This term in science, we are learning all about plants! We will develop our prior learning from the EYFS to our Year 3 objectives which include:

- Identifying and describing the functions of different parts of flowering plants: roots, stem/trunk, leaves and flowers.

- Exploring the requirements of plants for life and growth (air, light, water, nutrients from soil, and room to grow) and how they vary from plant to plant.

- Investigating the way in which water is transported within plants.

- Exploring the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants, including pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal.

Please see the detailed 'progression of learning' below to demonstrate how our scientific knowledge in this unit develops as we move through the school.

When in Rome!

This term, we are continuing with our topic focus of Rome and Italy, and move into our Geography area of learning.

We will be developing our geographical skills by using atlases and online materials to locate Italy and it's cities on maps, and enhance our knowledge of the varying human and physical features that can be found in the country.

By the end of this term, we will have investigated our Key Concepts which are to:

- Discuss how Italy is represented.

- Describe the physical and human features of Italy.

- Understand what impact Italy's national scale has globally.

We will also be able to discuss and articulate our conceptual focus which is to convince someone that the physical and human features of Italy make it a fascinating location.

Below is a progression map to highlight how our learning develops in Geography as we move through our learning in primary school.
