Term 5

English Reading and Writing

In Destination Reader this term, we will be focusing on a range of poems by different authors. We will use the poems to develop our reading fluency, comprehension and understandings of different genres in reading. The poems we look at will be from the Victorian era, about the seaside or about the railway to link into our History topic this term Postcards from the seaside.

In writing we will be focusing on the book Leon and the place between by Grahame Baker-Smith, we will use a range of writing purposes that include writing description in the style of the author for our own stories and persuasive writing.

With writing, please ensure your child continues to practise their Common Exception Words spellings at home using the materials we have provided.

With reading, the children should continue to access a range of texts that utilise their AR books (brought home daily and read at least 4 times per week) and their MyOn online reading support.

Please see the MyOn guidance sheet that was sent home for assistance with accessing their accounts.

Use and understand the fraction notation

This term in maths, we are continuing to use the NCTEM recovery resources in connection with the National Curriculum to develop our mathematical reasoning and understandings around fractions, number, place value and a secure knowledge in mental mathematics.

We will focus on developing the use of known maths facts and different strategies to ask and answer varying questions relating to fractions. As the term progresses we will begin to look at measure and further secure our mental mathematical skills.

This term in science, we are learning all about forces and magnets! We will develop our prior learning from the EYFS to our Year 3 objectives which include:

- Compare how things move on different surfaces.

- Notice that some forces need contact between two surfaces and some can act at a distance.

- Observe how magnets attract and repel each other and attract some materials and not others.

Please see the detailed 'progression of learning' below to demonstrate how our scientific knowledge in this unit develops as we move through the school.

Postcards from the seaside

This term, we are starting our topic focus of Victorain England with a focus on how the industrial era changed to develop holidays in sea side towns such as Eastbourne.

We will be developing our History skills by researching online and using fact books.
