English (includes reading and writing)
In reading we will be enjoying The Explorer by Katherine Rundell.
In writing we will be increasing our range of independent writing and building on pieces from the autumn term.
We will learn about algebra in preparation for KS3 and engage in project based Maths.
Animals including humans
We will complete our learning about animals including humans. We will be learning about the circulatory system and how water and nutrients are transported around the human body.
It’s a Smuggler’s Life for Me
We will be considering trade on a local, national and international scale. We will think about why there is so much trade that happens to and from different locations. We will look at the impact that trade has on different people in different environments around the world including considering ‘fair trade.’
Our concept question is: Geographically speaking, why was smuggling so prevalent in and around Sussex?
Music (taught by Miss Dalton, Director of Music)
Composing using a computer
We will be creating our own musical compositions using the song maker and then bandlab. We will also be using our musical knowledge to create music digitally.
PE (taught by Sportitude coaches)
Striking and fielding
This term’s area of learning includes batting, bowling and fielding. We will be focusing on applying these skills in game situations.
Our learning this term is centred on an awareness of self-image and about the changes between girls’ and boys’ bodies during puberty and how to look after ourselves physically and emotionally.
Our theme for this term is beliefs and meanings and we will be considering the key question:
Does belief in Akhirah (life after death) help Muslims lead better lives?
We will develop our programming skills in the unit Variables in games.
DAILY READING - every pupil has a green reading record which they are expected to keep up to date with the texts they read. There is a space for parents and carers to comment or sign. Pupils that consistently have four signatures across a week (Wednesday to Wednesday) will be invited to a reading reward at the end of each term. Pupils may bring home a book from the class library or the Accelerated Reader library. Every pupil should have an Accelerated Reader book in school at all times.
Home learning can consolidate learning in class, provide opportunities for further study, develop links with parents and families and encourage independence in pupils. We are aware that secondary schools will expect pupils to be well organised and prepared so we aim to provide our pupils with the chance to learn these habits in Year 6.
A paper based home learning task that consolidates learning in class is set every Friday and is due on the following Wednesday. The task should take no longer than 20 minutes in total. It is reviewed in class with the pupils so questions can be answered and misconceptions addressed.
Pupils have access to myON (reading), Times Tables Rock Stars (multiplication facts) and Purple Mash (different curriculum areas). Login details can be found in reading records.
The Year 6 PE days are Tuesdays (6GS only) and Wednesdays (both classes). 6RS also have swimming lessons in Term 6. Please come to school wearing your PE kit.
Here is the PE uniform:
Plain black sweatshirts/jumper (or school jumper/hoodie instead)
