We are very pleased to welcome the children into year 2 and have lots of lovely learning experiences planned during the year.

Ducks Class - Mrs Noble and Miss Reid                           Swans Class - Mrs Akehurst and Miss Peacock

Term 1 Reading and Writing

We love reading!  This term we are going to be enjoying a variety of fiction and non-fiction books.  Many of these will be linked to our topic 'Pudding to Pepys' about the Great Fire of London.

These are some of our books we will enjoy.

In writing we will focus on; handwriting, using capital letters and full stops, writing at greater length and editing work. Children continuing RWI will continue to learn the rest of the phonic sounds and 'red words'. Most children will come home with a Read Write Inc book that they should be able to read independently. Some children will bring home a book from the library, once they have read it they will then take a quiz to access their understanding. It is extremely important to listen to your child read and read to them every day. These are the year 2 words that the children need to learn to read and spell by the end of the year.

Term 1 Maths

In maths this term, our topic 'Investigating Number Systems'. By the end of this topic children will be able to:

  • read and write numbers to at least 100 in numerals and words
  • recognise the place value of each digit in a 2-digit number (tens, ones)
  • identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations
  • compare and order numbers from 0 up to 100 using <, > and = signs
  • use place value and number facts to solve number problems

Please continue to help you child learn their division and multiplication facts for their 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables.

Term 1 Science Chemistry: Materials.

We will enjoy experimenting with different materials - discovering which float, which are waterproof and why different materials suit different purposes.

As a scientist I will...

Ask simple questions and answer them in different ways.

Group materials to show how well they float.

Plan a simple test.

Term 1 PE

This term, we will be having PE twice a week!

Our new PE days are on Wednesdays and Fridays so please ensure the children come in fully dressed for PE on these days.

This term's focus is on team building. We will then be moving onto ball skills and invasion games.

Term 1 History - Pudding to Pepys.

Our first topic is very exciting! We will be learning about the Great Fire of London. Our key question is 'some people believe that the Great Fire of London was a good thing – do you agree?'

Key concepts -

We will learn to describe how a historical event was caused and what happened as a result.

We will explore how things have changed between a period in history and the present, giving simple reasons.

We will identify how one period in history has connections with others.

In Music we will be learning to experiment with instruments - creating, selecting and combining sounds to represent different types of weather with our music teacher Mrs Fairhead.  Our focus will by on dynamics.

Term 1 - Art

The children will create a colour wheel using primary and secondary colours, considering hot and cold colours. They will spend time learning about tints, shades and tones and create an abstract painting using tints and shades. Children will look at pictures that represent the Great Fire of London, including artwork by JMW Turner, Ron Embleton and Jan Griffier. They will consider if they are accurate representations. They will use their skill of mixing shades and tints to create a painting representing the Great Fire.
