Term 1

Year 6 - Term 1

Welcome to the start of year 6!
Please have a read of the information below to find out more about what we will be learning and focusing on this half-term!

Who let the Gods out?

History, Geography, Art and Design

This term, our topic is 'Who let the Gods out?' which focuses on history during the times of Ancient Greece. This will be a  study where we explore democracy, the Olympics and the Greek gods. Our concept question for this topic will be:

What impact has the Ancient Greeks had on our civilization today?

At the end of term, the children will be taking part in an 'Ancient Greek Day' where we invite children to dress up for the occasion.

Term 1 Reading

This term our key text will be 'Holes' which was written by Louis Sachar. This book will immerse the children in a story about friendship, perseverance and the consequence of choices. The children will be taught using the destination reader style which will develop their reading skills.

Term 1 Maths

In maths this term, we will be starting this term off by consolidating our understanding of place value and number. Alongside, we will be developing our times table knowledge and arithmetic skills.

As the children are moving towards the end of KS2, it is vitally important that they have a good understanding of their multiplications and their corresponding division facts. It would be really appreciative if you could support your child at home.

We will also continue to practise our times tables by having weekly quizzes and daily Maths Meetings.

Term 1 P.E.

This term, the children will be having two P.E. sessions per week, so need to come into school in their P.E. kit. P.E days will be on a Wednesday and a Thursday afternoon

.

Our main focuses will be circuit training, team building activities and invasion games.
