PE

The importance of PE

At Heron Park Primary Academy, Physical Education (PE) is a vital part of our curriculum, designed to be inclusive and engaging for every child. We create a supportive yet challenging environment where all pupils can thrive. Through PE, we promote physical health, fitness, and overall well-being, helping children develop the skills and confidence to lead active lives. Guided by our motto — We care, we play, we grow and ALWAYS try our best — we encourage teamwork, resilience, and a lifelong love of movement and sport.

Vision

PE gives children the skills and understanding to make a positive impact on their own health now and in the future. We aim to deliver high quality teaching and learning opportunities to enable all pupils to succeed, build resilience, team building and personal skills, mental and physical stamina, a positive lifestyle and personal fitness.

Our Curriculum

Children compete in a variety of competitive sports across the local area with other schools to cooperate and collaborate effectively as part of a team and demonstrate skills which will be embed for future team/player sports, activities or other life scenarios.

Lessons

PE lessons throughout the year cover the requirements of the National Curriculum.

Term 1 - 3 weeks Team Building Skills / OAA, 4 weeks Ball Skills / Invasion Games

Term 2 - 6 weeks Ball Skills / Invasion Games

Term 3 - 6 weeks Dance

Term 4 - 6 weeks Gymnastics

Term 5 - 6 weeks Athletics

Term 6 - 7 weeks Striking and Fielding Games / Over the Net Games

Classes receive a sports lesson per week, delivered by their experienced Infinite Sports coaches or by their class teacher. In addition to this, the children receive 3 blocks of 6 weeks of swimming lessons during their time at the Academy – usually in Years 4, 5 and 6.  We enhance our pupils’ physical development through our OPAL programme, providing opportunities for active play and growth.

Clubs

Our after school clubs are well attended and offer a variety of activities to appeal to everyone. We currently have many different clubs, offering a huge variety of activities ranging from Football and Basketball to Gymnastics and Apparatus Adventure.

A full guide to the clubs are shown in the “School Clubs” section of the website and can be booked through the Infinite Sport website - Infinite Sport After School Club
