Term 1
Year 1 - Term 1
Welcome to the start of year 1!
Please have a read of the information below to find out more about what we will be learning and focusing on this half-term!
Toy Story: Science, History, Geography, Art and Design
This term, our topic is 'Toy Story' which focuses on toys throughout history. We will investigate how times have changed how children play, as well as what they play with.
We will look at the different materials that toys have been made from in the past, comparing them to present-day toys. We will also be stepping back in time to learn how teddies have developed throughout the ages.
Within our art lessons, we will be looking at representing toys using collage, taking inspiration from Robert Rauschenberg's art work.
Reading
This term we will be looking at two key texts: 'Lost in the Toy Museum: An Adventure' and 'Traction man'. These are high quality texts, linked to our topic that look at toys from both the past and present. Our key learning points will support children to be confident in writing simple sentences with correct punctuation as well as building on oral story telling.
Maths
In maths this term, we will be focusing on place value within 10. We will further our learning by using our understanding of place value to work out addition and subtraction questions.
We will also continue to practise building our speed counting, forward and backwards within 10.

Phonics
To best meet the needs of children in Reading, in Year 1 we will continue to adopt the Read Write Inc (RWI) approach and follow the RWI pathway until children are confident and fluent readers. Our reading lessons are taught in colour banded groups with others at a similar reading level, which allows for learning to be specific and for children to quickly progress between groups.
What is RWI? Watch this video to hear all about the amazing work we do in school.
P.E.
This term, the children will be having two P.E. sessions per week, so need to come to school in their P.E. kit.
Our P.E days:
Tuesday and Friday for both year 1 classes.
Our main focuses will be team building activities and invasion games.
