Year 5 - Term 1
Welcome to the start of year 5!
Please have a read of the information below to find out more about what we will be learning and focusing on this half-term!
In English this term, we will be reading 'Charlotte's Web' by E.B. White in our daily Destination Reader lessons. The novel is about Fern and her family, who live on a farm in mid 20th century America. Fern adopts a pig called Wilbur and the story tells of the relationship between Wilbur and his spider friend Charlotte who vows to ensure that Wilbur isn't sent to market for slaughter.
Through our reading, we will be examining how the author maintains a 1950's setting through his choice of language and setting descriptions.
Our writing this term will also be based around this text, looking at persuasive writing. We will even be creating our own 'children's farm' website pages before moving on to narrative writing to produce our own, alternative chapters for the text.
In maths this term, we will be focusing on place value, learning to partition numbers up to 1,000,000, understanding the value of each digit.
We will then move on to addition and subtraction. This will include mental and written methods for calculations, reasoning and problem solving.
Our science topic this term is called 'Properties and Changes of Materials'. In this topic, we will be:
• comparing and grouping together everyday materials based on their properties
• understanding that there are three states that a material can exist in: solid, liquid or gas
• recognising that some materials will dissolve in a liquid to create a solution and some materials are insoluble
• understanding that some changes are reversible and others are not
This term the children will be having PE twice a week on the following days:
5PM - Monday
5NS - Tuesday
5PM and 5NS - Friday
The children need to come into school dressed for PE on both of these days.
This term the children will be focusing on "team building" skills and we will be learning to play a variety of invasion games.
The children will be learning about World War II this term, finding out more about the conflict and the impact it had on civilian lives around the world. In week 3 of the term, on Wednesday 21st September, we will have a visit from 'Hands on History' who will provide an interactive and educational day of activities for the children to participate in. A letter about this will be sent home in week 1 of the term.
We would like children to come to school dressed as WWII evacuees on the day - please see images below for ideas.
